The @#$%@#!! Living Room Ceiling

Well, guys, I finally did it.  I painted the goddamned living room ceiling.

I started the ceiling project in 2012 - three years ago - with my then-master bedroom, followed by the dining room, kitchen, hallways, and eventually the guest bath and two small bedrooms as I re-made them a year ago when Sylvan moved in.  By the time that I got to the living room, I was out of steam, out of paint, out of time in which to work, and injured, to boot.  (I'm still injured, but fuck it).

The holiday weekend past gave me a much-needed break from working two jobs and filling every spare second of time with sleep, depression, and sewing projects (my Very Last Commission Ever is going up on the SCA blog shortly - it's a doozy).  What'd I do for Thanksgiving?  I painted the goddamned living room ceiling!  Yay!

Halfway there. Bye-bye, stupid blue ceiling that turned the whole house
into a cave. The paint is [two coats of] a self-priming latex interior which
I mixed to match the other ceilings in the house ("White Clay" by Behr).
The kitchen cabinets are the same color).

The "clean end" of the room (the other end still had paint stuff
all over it).  I love the feeling of height this gives the room.

And I adore this little corner.  Corner windows: check.
Table fulla plants: check. Dog sleeping under the table:
heehee.

YAY!

Okay, so, technically there IS still one room I haven't gotten around to yet, ceiling-wise: the master bath.  But I have plans for the entire master suite (which is now a gigantic craft room), and I'm not touching ANYTHING in there until I'm ready to do the whole room (and have time, and money, and my arm's not trying to fall off, and I'm no longer working two jobs, which I still am at present. Ugh).

Shelly, the Biggest Derp.

P.S.:  Oh!  Idk if you noticed (does anybody even read this horrible blog? Probably not, but it's still fun to do), but I also rearranged all the furniture.  Pics of all very soon, I promise.

My Ikea Hyllis Is On IkeaHackers Today!

IkeaHackers is featuring my Hyllis entertainment console makeover today!  You can see the post

And since I've actually finished that wall since I sent them the email, here's a shot of it all put together (until I change it again, you know how I am):

The original blog post about how I did it is here.

A HYLLIS Makeover of My Own

After seeing this post from Skreytum Hus (via Apartment Therapy), I suddenly had the solution to all of my "entertainment center" problems!  Sylvan and I wanted a wall-o-shelving around our tv, and had seen many an idea online, but hadn't decided on anything, until we saw what Soffia had done.  What a fantastic idea!

I started with three of Ikea's galvanized steel HYLLIS shelving units - only $14.99 each.  I assembled them before I did anything else, to get a feel for how much space on the wall they'd take up, and exactly what I wanted to do with them.  It was simple enough: remove the bottom row of shelves, leaving the units about 35" high.

It took me three days of searching high and low for two missing hacksaws (the hell??) before I remembered I have a Dremel.  Fail.

I left the shelves fully assembled to do this. I thought about taking them apart to cut the legs off, but I was leery of messing up the measurements.  This way let me "measure" by wrapping a piece of blue painters' tape around each leg, just below what would become the new bottom shelf, and then just cutting off below the tape. Easy.

One.

I'm here to tell you, there's a reason those little round cutoff wheels come in packs of a million.  #%&@#$!@$

Wear your safety glasses, kids.

Three!

Now to paint them!  Oh, no...wait...no metal primer in stock.

I set about working on the top for the unit instead.  It's simple enough - some 4" pine bed slats I wasn't using anymore, pieced to create a 74x13" tabletop that will span all three HYLLIS units when placed side by side, and glu---

Aaaand I'm out of wood glue.  THE HELL??

And so...to be continued, LOL.

Tole!

Remember the antique lily chandelier that I acquired and refinished, and hung in my guest bath?

(via ME!)

I've recently come across TWO blog posts about them -  Apartment Therapy has one up today; and Design Sponge has one from 2013.

This chandelier is Italian "Tole" (/toe-lə/), and refers to ornate fixtures usually painted, gilded, or shellac'd (to prevent rust on metal fixtures) - and also refers to similarly-painted tin trays and other metal or wood objects. They're often brightly colored:

Or painted in gold, or darker metal tones:

Squee!  I have to admit, I don't like the colored ones; but I LOVE the white and gold finishes I've seen.  and I adore my gold bathroom chandelier. :)

Meanwhile, In Living Room Land

This week, I have lots to do in the living room.  I'm finally making that day sofa cover, and I'll get to talking about this "new" couch I've alluded to in the past few weeks.  I'm also juuuuust about ready to start re-arranging the entire thing.  You heard me. The entire. Thing.  You'll see.

In the meantime, some inspiration pictures, which also serve as hints:

Something Green, Something New

I did two things yesterday:

1.   I re-organized some of the houseplants into a more green-
house-like space.  This is the window corner in the living
room, behind the little Day Sofa.

2.  I started a gardening blog!  You all know about the Martian Death Fungus and the drought;  well, 2013 is the year I start up the serious gardening once again!  You can follow my progress a bit here, from time to time, but if you're really interested, go check out A Bit of Earth.

And then suddenly, seemingly for no reason, she made a hat.

Oh, weird - I thought I posted this like a month ago.   Here, have a random-ass, outdated post:

And then I joined Ravelry.com!  Because YARN.  This happens every year around this time.

DIY Shopping, September Edition

Not that there was a previous edition, or ever will be another.  You never know.

Let's! Go! Shopping!

Lowe's
  1. 3 packages drywall anchors & screws
  2. 1 metal wall-mount shelf rail
  3. 3 metal shelf brackets (the kind that hang from said rail)
  4. 3 pieces of oak-veneer MDF, 1/4" (unrelated to the shelving parts)
Design*Sponge

Advance Auto Parts
Which is, by the way, my very favorite auto parts store. They're always nice, patient, well-informed and informative - and they don't give me that "Helpless Little Woman" crap that some auto parts places are notorious for with female customers!  Yes, I CAN work on my own car, thank you very much, and I don't need testicles to do it!
  1. air filter
  2. gas cap (because mine broke yesterday! WTF?)
Big. Brass. Ovaries.

Ikea!!!
(Ikea with three exclamation points, because that's how much I love it).
  1. 2 packages LILL sheer mesh curtain panels
  2. 3 15" SAMLA clear storage boxes
  3. linen fabric (AINA), white, yardage to be determined when I see the quality in person

yay!

Now to DO something with all that stuff! I did put the gas cap on yesterday before I even left the store parking lot.  And I put everything away when I got home instead of dumping it on the dining room table or the garage floor, LOL.

Got caught up on my sewing last night, and repaired a table that I bought from a friend last week, which I broke the second I got home, LOL.  More on that later in the week. :)

Ok, so I haven't gone to Ikea yet. Thursday!

In Lieu of Simply Apologizing...

Again, I mean. For the lack of substantive posts.  I *am* actually working on things this month, though.  I may or may not have a couple of nifty posts for you this week and next, if my schedule works out this week.

Here are some hints as to what I'm working on at the moment:

Laura Stuff.

Look what my BFF made for me!  :D  Is that not the cutest thing ever?  HEE!

I say to you again: hee!

Also...  You guys need to check out Pinterest, if you haven't already.  I, for one, was getting sick of going over and over and over ALL those damned bookmarks on my internet broswer.  Folders and labels are great and everything, but if you collect design inspiration pics from all over the internet, it's just not enough!  Pinterest allows you to "pin" favorites to a board for easy viewing (no searching for links and then waiting for them to load).   They keep track of sources and stuff for you, you can look through other people's boards and "like" items and collect them yourself  -  and lots of other stuff.  Here's one of my boards...of course the first thing I did was make a blue one. :)

Huevos

When life hands you lemons...paint them blue!   :D  Okay, maybe that one's just me.  But in case you hadn't noticed, I'm kind of a fan...

blue stuff in/around my house

Somewhere in my bookmarks and inspiration files is a folder called, "If I Only Had the Balls To Paint the Whole Thing Blue."   In truth, I have a blue room - I have three, in fact:  my master bedroom, master bath, and bedroom closet/dressing room (which I never finished, in case you actually remembered that/were wondering).  But oh, if I only had the balls to do this...

Insert Catchy Title [Here] - Favorite Blogs

Didn't do anything terribly photo-worthy over the weekend:  mostly sewing (costume stuff) & more work on spiffing up the backyard (more grass seed).  I have some stuff I want to get started on this week, including starting work on the new bed and a couple of small projects that I can get done in a couple of hours - knick-knack-y things - that I'll be posting about this week and next.

Meanwhile, I read ninety-five blogs, 89 of which are decor-related, though not all of them post every day or even every week, or I'd never keep up with them all, lol.  Most of that list can be found by viewing my profile, if you're interested.

Allow me to introduce just  a few of my favorite blogs - rather than do a list of logos or links, these are pics I've collected as inspiration from each of these sites, each of which I think exemplifies the flavor and soul of the blog it came from:

La Maison Boheme - lush, eclectic, bohemian, vintage...
Of Peacocks & Paisleys - beautiful Indian design and photography
Dear Designer's Blog   constantly surprises me

An Indian Summer - gorgeous Indian decor & architecture

Better After - an ENTIRE BLOG of awesome B&As!  <3

Blogfail + OPP (Other People's Pictures)

I can't seem to keep my brain in my head this entire week.  I've completely forgotten what I was going to post today, and I didn't even have a draft with notes in it to pull from, like I normally do.  So, instead...

Is that gorgeous or what?!  That's from a made-over factory-turned-home featured today on Dear Designer's Blog which is awesome every day, but this post, and this bedroom in particular, are just gorgeous.

And while we're on the subject of  rooms/things that I find beautiful and inspiring (because I have just decided that we are):

...I don't rememeber where I found this!

In case you hadn't noticed, I adore art walls.  And I secretly love white spaces to LOOK at...I've tried living with them before, and I always feel like the most obvious thing in the room.  I'm a hider.  I want big fluffy dark things to curl up in and peer over the back of to see what the people over there are doing.  But I love looking at white spaces. :)

la maison boheme

I love, love, love
  1. blue
  2. turquoise
  3. curtains
  4. window seats
  5. tufted furniture
  6. piles of pillows
  7. wooden floors
  8. huge windows                               I mean, this picture, COME ON.  Lurve!

...I didn't make a note of the source on this one, either. :(

I also absolutely covet a tufted ottoman like this one.  I've been meaning to build one for years, but I've never gotten around to it.  And actually...no, that needs a post of its own, never mind.  0:)

And, lastly...

some catalog a million years ago

I love the line of these tables (and these...and this...), and one day, when I grow up, I'm going to build this entertainment center.... ah, dreams.

See you guys tomorrow. :) <3

10 Questions

ApartmentTherapy asked us, in January, to consider ten questions to gain greater insight into the design and decor in our homes, and our interaction with them.  I thought I'd take a moment to answer them here (since I have nothing else to write about at the moment, lol):

Do I wake up in the morning feeling rested?
You know what?  NO.  I love my bed that I built, and my bedroom decor - it's restful to the eye and to my spirit, but my cheap, 4-year-old Ikea mattress has already gone to the dogs (erm...literally, since it's recently come to my attention that a certain black canine who shall remain nameless has been sleeping on the bed while I'm at work.  Good thing I keep it covered during the day!)

Can I play music in my home, including in the bedroom and bath?
I love that this question made ApartmentTherapy's list:  music is as important to me as breathing, and sound is just as important in the feel of a space as smell or color or texture.  So, yes!  I have a stereo or at least a CD player in nearly every area of the house, and my living room and guest room are full of musical instruments.  There's almost always music playing somewhere, whether people are visiting or not; and I always load up my big stereo with at least 6 hours of music to play in the background when I have a party.

Do I have a comfortable spot in my home to read, nap, etc. that's NOT the bed?

Eh...I'm gonna have to go with "no" on that one.  The couch would be a great spot, but I can't seem to find a way of sitting on it that's really comfy for long periods of time, myself (although Kress sleeps on it all the time, so it must just be me).  My little meditation corner could be, but it doesn't yet have nearly enough cushioning for my creaky butt.  I'd really love to have a big, floppy, overstuffed chair somewhere in the living room, but I don't really have any place to put one.

Om and stuff.

Can I walk around barefoot in my house?
I do, actually - my home is pretty much a barefoot one.  I have a "landing area" near the front door for purses and keys that is also a shelf for putting shoes into.  That said, with three dogs and a backyard with weak grass that can't stand up to their play, my hard floors get gross in a HURRY.  Especially when it rains!  I don't have rugs for allergy reasons; it feels sometimes like I never do anything but vacuum and mop.  But it's worth it to have floors I'm not embarrassed to have people put their feet on.

Does my home smell nice?
I hope so.  I have *eight* pets, so I worry about that issue a lot.  I open the windows as often as possible (allergies, argh), wash all the curtains and pillows and throw rugs every week (more allergy issues!) and keep incense and candles going about 70% of the time that I'm home.  So I hope it smells good...and not doggy or litterbox-y.

Is there a convenient spot for a guest to put down a coat or hang a bag?
See above re: landing area + shoe shelf.  Oddly enough, though, when I have a party, more often than not people carry that stuff into the living room and drop it on the floor next to the computer desk, instead of putting it on the shelf provided.  I have NO idea why that is!

How about a spot in which to entertain guests?
I have tons of room for tons of people; and I don't quite have enough room for all of them to sit - but when is everyone sitting at the same time?  I'm  not a dinner-party type of gal, you know? People mill.  People dance.  They go out into the backyard to hang out on the patio.  Mostly they stand around in the kitchen, which used to bug me, but really, I don't care, as long as everyone's having fun. :)

maybe it's the magnets

Can I vary the mood in my home with lighting to serve that room's functions?
You know, I tend to ignore lighting, aside from just ...having some, which I understand is a common "mistake"  (it's not 100% my fault, you know. Lamps are expensive). I'd like to have more focused lighting in the living room  - a few lamps is much cozier than a blaring overhead light - but at the moment, I have NO clue how to do that without having cords scattered all around.  It's something I'm thinking about.

I recently took a short trip out of town, and I put my bedside lamp on a timer to make it look like there was activity in the house.  I left it that way when I got back for a while, I really loved the way the lighting just kinda took care of itself; and I think when I get around to doing lamps in the living room I'll probably do the same thing.

Bwahaha!

How organized is my home?
That depends on who you ask.  Other people say it's organized.  *I* feel like my house has been hit by a tornado most of the time. Mileage varies.

And, most importantly, do I feel happy walking into my home?  Am I proud of it?
Most of the time: yes, and yes.  Sometimes I hate it and I want to take off and nuke the site from orbit and start all over at a new house, LOL.  I imagine everyone feels like that, tho.

Just like everyone who blogs periodically just gets sick of the whole process and doesn't feel like blogging anymore...and I think I've hit my first one of those.  Sorry for the erratic posting lately, but, thanks for playing, all the same.  I'll come back around. :)
